Steenslag 94 - background information

Rieke Bruijgom Thea Bonnecroy Gyelt Tuinstra (cv), Vincent van Hout and Harald Berends are sculptors working in the same studio in The Hague in The Netherlands. They met each other at the centre for art and culture in The Hague, "Het Koorenhuis".

The name "Steenslag 94" was chosen to present ourselves to the outside world. It does not mean that we are a collective of sorts with one opinion on (the making of) art. We work independently on our own ideas.

There are some things that bind us, though. Most of all we love working stone. Also, working in the same studio, we influence and have influenced each others work and way of working. We all prefer to work the stone directly, called taille direct. Without previous design or plan, the sculpting is done directly in stone. The sculpture is formed slowly by traditional means with hammer and chissel. Intuition is an important part of this proces. Time factors in as an carrier of harmonic form [GT: these metaphors are very hard to translate :-{ ...]. Natural stone imparts a strong attraction and a sort of basic feeling when touched or worked.
